A man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison and lifelong deportation by a Swedish court of appeal after raping his wife behind a bicycle shed.

The conviction follows a legal process that initially saw the man acquitted in the district court, a decision that was later overturned upon appeal. According to reporting by Expressen, the attack occurred after the woman informed her husband that she wanted to end their relationship.

The August 2024 Attack

The incident took place during an evening in August 2024. The couple had arranged to meet in the city to discuss their shared child and whether they should seek assistance from family law services.

The man arrived at the meeting aggressive and appearing to be under the influence of an unknown substance, accompanied by several other men. When the woman’s mother arrived at the scene in a car, the man approached the vehicle and smashed one of its windows.

Following this, the man tore the woman’s clothes and raped her behind a bicycle shed. The woman described the experience as being completely paralyzed.

Relationship History and Abuse

The woman described the man as having been kind and helpful when they first met, but stated that he became controlling and violent after their wedding.

The couple had previously separated, but the woman took him back after he completed a prison sentence. At that time, he had obtained a driver’s license, sought employment, and appeared to be drug-free.

The relationship deteriorated again when the woman learned that the man was suspected of committing new serious crimes and noticed signs that he had resumed using drugs. This led her to tell him that they should live their lives separately.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

The case first went to the district court, where the man was acquitted of the charges. The report indicates that two lay judges were responsible for driving through the acquittal verdict.

The case was subsequently appealed to the court of appeal, which overturned the lower court’s decision. The court of appeal found the man guilty and sentenced him to three and a half years in prison and ordered his lifelong deportation from the country.

Nearly two years after the assault, the woman continues to receive treatment from a psychologist. Regarding the court’s decision, the woman stated that she felt she could finally protect their child from the man.
