Honda Multi-Fingered Hand and Redwire STAARK Arm Combat Space Station Labor Shortages
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station spend significant portions of their workdays on mundane maintenance, such as scanning barcodes for inventory management and swapping out biological sample trays, according to project details. With NASA planning to deorbit the football-field-sized International Space Station into the Pacific Ocean around 2030, private companies like Axiom Space, Vast, and Orbital Reef are developing commercial replacements that will operate with smaller crews of two to four astronauts and periods of uncrewed operation.
To maintain continuous scientific research under these constraints, the Honda and Redwire partnership pairs Redwire’s Space Technology Autonomous Agile Robotic Kit with Honda’s advanced dexterous robotic hand. Redwire brings existing orbital experience, currently managing eight operational science facilities on the International Space Station, while its STAARK robotic arm provides an agile platform capable of autonomously tracking and grasping dynamic objects in orbit.
Honda Tactile Sensors and Redwire Capabilities Face Unannounced Commercial Station Integration
Honda contributes decades of robotic manipulation research, utilizing a multi-fingered hand equipped with actively controlled joints and tactile and force sensors throughout its fingertips and palm.
Tom Sladek, chief engineer of the Space Development Division at Honda Development & Manufacturing of America, stated Honda space initiatives, including our robotic hand, are focused on enabling practical operations in orbit.
Sladek added Working with Redwire, Honda is evaluating how robotics with human-like dexterity could support research activities aboard the next generation of commercial space stations, helping crews accomplish more in an environment with fewer personnel while improving operational efficiency.
Despite the technical capabilities of the combined system, early commercial space stations such as Vast’s Haven-1 and Axiom Space’s Axiom Station have not announced formal agreements to adopt the Redwire and Honda robotic setup.
International Astronautical Congress Debut in Antalya
The companies introduced the concept via press release and are presenting the technology to commercial station developers and prospective partners at the International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Turkey. That event runs through October 9, 2026, where industry stakeholders will evaluate whether the burgeoning space automation sector adopts this robotic architecture or selects alternative systems.
