Early Days at hong Kong Disneyland
Twenty years ago, on the opening day of Hong Kong Disneyland, a performer named Kitty embarked on a career defined by connection and purpose. As one of the few original “opening team” cast members, she has witnessed and contributed to the resort’s evolution, currently serving as a Cast Services Manager within the Security, Safety, Fire and Health services team.
Kitty’s journey began in the early 2000s while pursuing professional dance training. She successfully auditioned for a role at the newly opening park, recalling her excitement upon receiving the offer.
The Magic of Performance
Kitty’s initial role was as a dancer in the “Festival of the Lion King” show. This position allowed her to participate in numerous notable events, including the grand opening celebrations, movie premieres, and annual Christmas festivities and New Year’s Eve countdowns.
She vividly remembers the energy of her first performance, noting a powerful reciprocal connection with the audience. “I remember we gave 100% energy, but the audience gave us 150% back. The connection with the audience was so close. That bonding with the audience was unforgettable,” she recalled.
Building a Disney Culture
Kitty also highlighted the extensive onboarding process for all cast members, regardless of thier role. She described how dancers, engineers, and custodial staff all participated in a shared orientation, learning a common “Disney language” and fostering a unified culture. This initial training, while nerve-wracking, instilled a sense of excitement for the future.
