Hong Kong recently celebrated its vibrant cultural heritage with a dazzling display of traditional artistry at the Hong Kong Dragon and Lion Festival. Held at the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Center Piazza, the festival captivated audiences with colorful dancing lions and the captivating “Ying Song and Dance” from the Chaoshan region.
this unique fusion of four intangible cultural heritage skills – dragon dance, lion dance, zhao, and Ying Song and Dance – drew large crowds of locals and tourists alike. Cameras clicked and phones were raised to capture the spectacle as performers brought these ancient traditions to life.
“This event inherits the traditional essence of dragon and lion dance and is of unique meaning,” said Luo Shupei, Director of the Culture, Sports and tourism Bureau. she emphasized the importance of sharing this rich cultural experiance with both local and international audiences.
The festival, first held on New Year’s Day in 2011, holds a special place in Hong Kong’s history. Yan Wenyu, the convener of the organizing committee, recalled the inaugural event, which saw 1,111 dragons and lions dancing in Tsim Sha Tsui, setting a Guinness World Record.
“The main purpose of the event is to encourage various parts of the world to hold dragon and lion festivals on New Year’s Day, to ring the gongs and drums for the new year, and to inherit the dragon and lion culture,” Wenyu explained.
The Hong Kong Dragon and Lion Festival serves as a vibrant reminder of the city’s deep-rooted cultural traditions and its commitment to preserving them for generations to come.
