A recent fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong, the deadliest in decades, has resulted in 159 fatalities, including one firefighter, and left approximately 3,000 people homeless. The event prompted a widespread outpouring of support from individuals and organizations.
Financial contributions and Aid
As of Friday, December 6, 2024, a total of HK$3 billion (approximately US$385 million) had been raised for fire survivors through contributions from both the private sector and the government. Donations encompassed essential items like shoes, clothing, food, and logistical services.
Long-Term Support: Education for Orphans
Beyond immediate needs, donors are also focusing on long-term support for those most affected. Stella Cheung, chairwoman of the HF (Hong Kong) Foundation, announced that an anonymous donor has pledged to fully fund the undergraduate education in Hong Kong for one or two children who lost one or both parents in the fire.
The grant, administered through Cheung’s organization, will cover educational expenses until the completion of their bachelor’s degrees. Details are still being finalized to accommodate the specific needs of the children involved.
Cheung emphasized that the donor “recognized the importance of education and believed that donating to this cause could change one’s life, a gesture far more impactful than giving cash.”
