Hong Kong police and social welfare authorities arrested a 61-year-old grandmother and a 43-year-old foreign domestic helper in Wong Tai Sin, after viral social media videos showed an 11-year-old girl tearfully pleading for help while facing verbal abuse and suspected neglect.
Viral Distress Videos Expose Alleged Child Abuse in Wong Tai Sin
The investigation began after two harrowing video clips circulated widely across online platforms. Captured inside a closed room, the first footage showed the visibly frightened schoolgirl whispering an urgent plea for help while heavy, aggressive shouting and banging resounded from beyond the door. A second video showed a middle-aged man relentlessly shouting curse words and violently pounding a table over academic matters while she wept continuously.
Alarmed by the footage, vigilant netizens initiated a search effort that identified the girl’s primary school in Wong Tai Sin, prompting them to alert both school authorities and law enforcement. The Hong Kong Police Force subsequently received a referral from the Social Welfare Department regarding suspected child mistreatment. Officers located the girl, who was conscious but suffering from red swelling on her arms and legs.
Medical personnel initially admitted her to Queen Elizabeth Hospital before arranging a transfer to the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital for continued care and observation. Following preliminary inquiries, officers from the Wong Tai Sin District Criminal Investigation Team arrested the girl’s 61-year-old grandmother and the 43-year-old domestic helper on suspicion of ill-treatment or neglect of a child.
Rising Child Protection Concerns Amid Mandatory Reporting Laws
Figures released by the Social Welfare Department’s Child Protection Registry reveal that the incidence of child abuse climbed from 0.92 per 1,000 children in 2020 to 1.54 in 2025, representing a 67 per cent jump across the six-year span. Experts have warned that multiple factors contributed to the rise, including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic downturns, parenting style changes, and family dysfunction.
Authorities enacted the Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse Ordinance in January, requiring professionals such as teachers and medical workers to flag suspected cases. In the first five months of the law, authorities received 176 reports of suspected child abuse involving 188 children, according to official figures.
Ongoing Investigation and Medical Assessments
Both suspects remain in police custody for questioning, and investigators confirmed that further arrests have not been ruled out as inquiries continue. The Social Welfare Department stated that it contacted the family immediately upon learning of the incident and arranged a medical assessment to ensure the girl receives appropriate care.

The welfare agency will assess the family’s situation and the girl’s welfare needs to offer appropriate assistance and support. Meanwhile, investigators have not yet disclosed the identity or status of the man seen shouting in the second video clip as inquiries in Wong Tai Sin proceed.
