Hong kong Residents Lack Awareness of Medical Fee Waiver Expansion

Updated June 06, 2025

A recent survey indicates that one in ⁣four Hong Kong residents are not aware of the expanded medical fee waiver mechanism. ‍This lack of awareness ⁢has⁤ prompted lawmakers to call for increased government efforts to promote ⁣the ⁣public healthcare subsidy regime reform, which is set to⁣ be implemented in six months. The survey,⁢ conducted by the⁢ Federation‍ of Trade Unions, highlights a notable gap in public knowledge⁤ regarding the broadened safety net ⁤in ⁢public hospitals.

The survey, which included 724 participants between April 22 and May 13, revealed that many respondents had limited understanding of the measures designed to enhance financial support for patients. Stanley Ng Chau-pei, a lawmaker and president of the Federation of Trade unions, noted that residents⁢ were more familiar with fee increases in⁢ areas such as emergency rooms and general ⁤outpatient clinics.

⁤ “When residents have limited ⁤understanding of the reform, ⁢how can the government effectively implement the measures?” Ng said.

Ng emphasized ⁢the need for the government to‍ intensify its promotional efforts, especially ⁤in communicating how the⁤ reform will increase support for patients needing public healthcare. The survey found that ‍approximately 29% of respondents were unaware of the‍ relaxed income and‍ asset limits for the waiver mechanism. additionally, about 25% did not know⁤ about ⁣the ⁢HK,000 annual spending cap for public healthcare services.
