A crowd gathered in Hong Kong harbor as Chinese naval ships departed, prompting cheers and waves from onlookers. The ships sounded their horns as they passed through the harbor, creating a flurry of excitement.
Dedicated Enthusiast captures the Moment
Gan Hanyun, a 50-year-old military hardware enthusiast from Shenzhen, arrived at 6:00 a.m. to witness the ships’ departure. He expressed both excitement and emotion at the rare opportunity to see the vessels, stating he wasn’t sure when they would return.
Gan had previously photographed the ships upon their arrival in Hong Kong on Tuesday and returned with upgraded camera equipment, resolute to capture better images. He specifically aimed to get a clear shot of the Qi Jiguang, noting its unexpectedly large size had previously challenged his photographic efforts.
“I didn’t get a perfect shot the last time,” Gan said. “This time, I want to get a better picture of the Qi Jiguang. the ship was much bigger than I expected, it was completely out of my frame.”
Context and Significance
The visit of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ships to Hong Kong is a critically important event, demonstrating China’s continued assertion of its naval power and its connection to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Such visits are often seen as a display of national pride and a symbol of the Chinese military’s modernization.
The Qi Jiguang (舷号83) is a Type 055 destroyer, one of the most advanced surface combatants in the PLAN. Naval News details the Type 055’s capabilities, including its advanced radar systems and extensive missile armament. the other ship involved in the visit was the dongping (舷号900), a Type 903A replenishment ship.
These types of deployments are part of a broader pattern of increased PLAN activity in the region, including exercises in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. The Council on Foreign Relations provides analysis on China’s growing naval capabilities and its strategic implications.
