The trial of a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer and an accused China-linked mercenary has commenced in a Vancouver courtroom, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn international attention over allegations of fraud, espionage, and foreign influence operations tied to China.

Hongwei “Kevin” Sun, a Chinese national, is facing extradition to China to stand trial on allegations of fraud after nearly three years of legal proceedings in Canada. His case is being heard alongside that of former RCMP officer Cameron Jay Majcher, who is accused of violating Canada’s Security of Information Act by allegedly sharing sensitive police intelligence with Sun in exchange for financial compensation.

The proceedings began on April 18, 2026, in the British Columbia Supreme Court, where prosecutors outlined allegations that Sun operated as an illicit agent for Chinese interests while residing in Canada, using his business connections to facilitate the transfer of confidential information. Majcher, who retired from the RCMP in 2020, is alleged to have accessed restricted law enforcement databases and passed the information to Sun between 2019 and 2021.

Court documents allege that Sun used shell companies and overseas accounts to move funds, some of which were traced to payments made to Majcher. Prosecutors claim these transactions were part of a broader effort to gather intelligence on Canadian law enforcement practices and individuals of interest to Beijing, though no direct evidence of state direction from the Chinese government has been presented in court to date.

Majcher’s defence team has argued that the information shared was not classified and that Sun’s activities were limited to legitimate business consulting. They contend that the charges are politically motivated and stem from heightened tensions between Canada and China over issues including the detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, and Canada’s exclusion of Huawei from its 5G network.

Sun, who has been contesting extradition since his arrest in 2023, maintains his innocence and argues that the fraud charges in China are baseless and politically driven. His legal team has warned that returning him to China would expose him to an unfair trial and potential human rights violations, citing concerns about due process and treatment of foreign nationals in the Chinese judicial system.
