Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi will travel to China this week to visit two of the city’s sister cities, Chengdu and Fuzhou, as part of an effort to strengthen international ties and explore opportunities for cultural and economic exchange, including the potential acquisition of giant pandas for the Honolulu Zoo.

The trip, confirmed by the mayor’s office, follows Blangiardi’s previously scheduled stop in Beijing and marks a continued focus on deepening Honolulu’s relationships with key cities in Asia. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, and Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province, have both been official sister cities of Honolulu for several years, with existing agreements centered on education, trade, and cultural collaboration.

During the visit, the mayor is expected to meet with local officials in both cities to discuss ongoing partnerships and identify new areas of cooperation. A significant point of interest in the itinerary is the potential loan of giant pandas from China to the Honolulu Zoo, a topic that has been under discussion for months as part of broader efforts to enhance the zoo’s appeal and conservation programming.

Blangiardi has previously expressed interest in bringing pandas to Honolulu, noting their value as both a major public attraction and a symbol of international friendship. In past statements, he has highlighted the diplomatic significance of panda exchanges, which China has long used as a tool of soft power and bilateral engagement with cities and zoos around the world.

Honolulu’s sister city relationships with Chengdu and Fuzhou have included student exchange programs, business delegations, and joint cultural events. The mayor’s office said the upcoming trip aims to build on those foundations while exploring updated memoranda of understanding that could expand collaboration in sustainability, technology, and tourism.

While no formal agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, officials said the discussions will lay the groundwork for future initiatives. The mayor is scheduled to return to Honolulu later in the week, after which a detailed report on the outcomes of the meetings will be shared with the City Council and the public.

The Spectrum News staff first reported the travel plans based on a Google Alert discovery, which was later confirmed through official municipal channels. As of now, neither the Chengdu nor Fuzhou municipal governments have released public statements about the visit, but both cities maintain active sister city committees that have coordinated with Honolulu in recent years.

Honolulu currently maintains sister city relationships with eight cities worldwide, including locations in Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and China. The administration has emphasized that these partnerships are vital to fostering global understanding and creating opportunities for local residents, particularly in education and economic development.

The mayor’s office said the trip reflects Honolulu’s ongoing commitment to engaging with international partners in a respectful and mutually beneficial manner. Further details about the itinerary and specific meeting times are expected to be released closer to the date of travel.
