Riga, Latvia – The Latvian National Museum of Literature and Music (LNRMM) is celebrating its centennial in 2025 with a captivating exhibit that breathes new life into a Latvian literary classic. “Mērnieku laiki. Nepabeigts scenārijs trešajai ekranizācijai” (The Surveyor’s Times: An Unfinished Screenplay for a Third Adaptation) delves into the world of the iconic novel “Mērnieku laiki” (The Surveyor’s Times) by brothers Reinis and Matīss Kaudzīte. Published in 1879, the novel recently celebrated its 145th anniversary.
This exhibit, part of a larger series showcasing the museum’s diverse collection, explores the fascinating intersection of literature and cinema. Visitors can get a rare glimpse into the creative process behind this seminal work through original manuscripts and drafts of “Mērnieku laiki.”
“The Surveyor’s Times” is a story about boundaries – both physical and metaphorical. It’s a story about Latvian identity, ethics, and morality. Each interpretation of the novel reflects the “surveyor’s times” of its own era, whether it be the land surveying ordered by Tsar Alexander II, the collectivization and privatization of the Soviet era, or the globalized, ecologically and geopolitically turbulent world we live in today,” explains Kristīne Želve, the exhibit’s curator.
At the heart of the exhibit is an unfinished screenplay for a potential third film adaptation of “Mērnieku laiki.” Created using a “mapping” approach, the screenplay focuses on exploring connections and relationships rather than a definitive ending.
“This open-ended approach invites viewers to contemplate the boundaries we choose to draw in our own lives,” says Želve.
The exhibit promises to be a fascinating exploration of Latvian literature, history, and the enduring power of storytelling.
