Former ATP players who retired this season were honored at the Nitto ATP Finals on Friday. Dominic Thiem, Ivo Karlovic, Joao Sousa, and John Millman participated in an on-court ceremony. They received gifts from ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi.
“It was a dream,” Thiem said about his career. “I never thought I would achieve so much.”
The players enjoyed watching the Nitto ATP Finals and participated in a kids’ clinic. Thiem, a former No. 3 player, won 17 titles, including the US Open in 2020. Karlovic, known for his powerful serve, reached a high of No. 14 in 2008.
Sousa, the first Portuguese ATP champion in 2013, won four titles and was ranked No. 28 at his peak. He shared, “I never thought I would achieve what I did. It required belief and support from my family.”
Millman reached No. 33 in 2018 and famously defeated Roger Federer at the US Open that year. “I was tenacious and had support from fans. Tennis is an individual sport, but fans are crucial,” Millman stated.
