DALLAS (AP) — Hooters of america announced Monday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, seeking to restructure its debt and revitalize the brand through a strategic shift toward a franchise-only business model.
Financial Struggles and Restructuring Plan
The Atlanta-based company, like many resturant chains, has faced financial headwinds in recent years, including rising operating costs, increased wages, and a decline in customer traffic. To address these challenges, Hooters intends to sell its approximately 100 company-owned restaurants to two existing franchise groups located in Tampa, Florida, and Chicago. These groups already operate about one-third of all Hooters franchise locations in the United States.
Transition to Franchise Model
According to a press release, Sal Melilli, CEO of Hooters of America, described the bankruptcy filing as “an important milestone” in the company’s efforts to strengthen its financial foundation. he added that the move would allow Hooters to “continue to provide hospitality experiences and excellent food that our customers and communities expect.”
The company stated it will continue normal business operations during the bankruptcy proceedings but will evaluate company-owned locations, which coudl lead to some closures.
New Ownership and Future direction
Upon completion of the restructuring, all U.S. Hooters locations will be owned by Nord bay Capital franchise groups and TriArtisan Capital Advisors, who initially invested in Hooters franchises in 2019. Notably, the ownership groups include original Hooters founders, such as Neil Kiefer, CEO of the Hooters Inc. franchise group.
Kiefer told Bloomberg last week that part of the plan to revitalize the chain involves making Hooters more family-amiable.
hooters History and International Presence
The first Hooters restaurant opened in Clearwater, Florida, in 1983.The chain expanded internationally, including a location in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2010. Currently, only one franchise restaurant operates in Prague, and it is indeed not affected by the U.S. bankruptcy proceedings.
