Celebrated South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, best known for his critically acclaimed thrillers The Wailing and The Chaser, has unveiled the teaser trailer for his latest epic sci-fi action film, Hope, following its electrifying world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film, which premiered late Sunday night to a standing ovation lasting at least six to seven minutes, has already generated buzz for its high-octane action and cosmic mystery elements. Early comparisons to George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road suggest a relentless chase-driven narrative spanning the film’s substantial 160-minute runtime.
Set in the isolated village of Hope Harbor, near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, Hope follows Police Chief Bum-seok (played by Hwang Jung-min) and Officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) as they investigate a mysterious creature that has terrorized the community. What begins as a routine rural emergency quickly spirals into a surreal, reality-warping cosmic mystery.
Meanwhile, a group of hunters led by Sung-ki (Zo In-Sung) ventures into the nearby forest to track the beast, only to find themselves the prey instead. The film’s layered storytelling and shifting perspectives promise a twist-laden experience that defies expectations.
North American distribution rights for Hope were acquired by NEON ahead of its Cannes debut, with the studio releasing the teaser trailer today. The film is described as the most expensive Korean production ever made, underscoring its ambitious scope.
While the teaser offers only a tantalizing glimpse of the chaos to come, it confirms the presence of international stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton in the cast—though their roles as aliens remain unseen in this first look.
Hope is set for a fall theatrical release, positioning it as a major autumnal contender in the global cinema landscape. With Na Hong-jin’s signature blend of psychological tension and visceral action, the film appears poised to deliver a visually stunning and thematically rich experience for audiences.
For now, fans and critics alike will have to wait for further details as the full trailer and additional footage are expected to drop in the coming weeks.
