Hope on the Horizon: Groundbreaking National Cancer Registry Set to Revolutionize Patient Care
Establishment of the National Cancer Registry of Venezuela
The Minister of Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, and the Minister of Popular Power for Health, Magaly Gutiérrez, have initiated the establishment process for the use of the technological platform of the National Cancer Registry of Venezuela.
Jiménez emphasized that the launch of this platform will enable the optimization of performance hours, allowing scientists and health personnel to establish and identify a more planned and effective policy for cancer diagnosis and treatments through the epidemiological bulletin.
The platform is part of a comprehensive approach to modernize the National Cancer Programme, which includes the use of radio-diagnostic equipment, pathological anatomy laboratories, linear accelerators, and therapeutic committees with new treatments.
Magaly Gutiérrez, the Minister of Popular Power for Health, highlighted that this initiative is part of a pilot scheme, open to modifications, which will provide an overview of the cancer register in the country to plan public purchases and guarantee radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and oncological surgeries for patients.
Luis Capote Negrín, surgical oncologist, epidemiologist, and coordinator of the Central Cancer Registry, stressed that about half of the people suffering from cancer can be cured if it is properly managed with an efficient system of information, evaluation, and care.
He emphasized the importance of recording the estimated number of cancer cases, including the locations of the cancer, the age and gender of the patient, as well as a record of morbidity and mortality.
Representatives from 23 hospitals with oncological services available to the Venezuelan people attended the workshop, along with commissioners from five private clinics and two anti-cancer associations that work to care for cancer patients in the country.
National Development in Free Software
The technological platform of the National Cancer Registry of Venezuela is a national development in free software, which will enable the efficient management of cancer data and improve the quality of care for cancer patients.
The objectives of the induction period include reinforcing information about the importance of cancer registries, organizing a network-based system of hospital cancer registries, and processing, quality control, treatments, follow-up of cases, and their respective analyses.
