Jakarta (ANTARA) – Human aging is often driven by declining hormone levels, according to Professor wimpie pangkahila, an expert in Andrology, Sexology, adn Anti-Aging from Udayana University.
He explained that both men and women experience hormonal decline, contributing to the aging process. “The concept is that humans age because hormones decrease, not that hormones decrease because humans age. Thus, we should consider and treat aging as a preventable and treatable condition,” said Prof. dr. dr. Wimpie Pangkahila, Sp.And.,Subsp.SAAM during a health discussion in Jakarta on Thursday.
Professor Wimpie stressed the crucial role hormones play in human survival. Without them, basic life functions like pregnancy and reproduction would be impossible. Optimal hormone function enables women to become pregnant and men to father children.
Though, he noted that many people still underestimate the vital role hormones play in human life, ultimately impacting their quality of life.
Wimpie stated that hormonal changes begin in youth and continue with age.however, unhealthy lifestyles accelerate this decline. “Hormones, after birth, normally develop and increase until around the age of 40. At that point, a certain percentage of people begin to experience hormonal decline. I’ve seen female patients experiencing menopause at 40,which was rare in the past, but is becoming more common. This is due to unhealthy lifestyles, such as staying up late and consuming unhealthy foods,” he said.
Doctor Wimpie explained that aging isn’t a passive process, but is influenced by various internal and external factors. Internal factors include declining or imbalanced hormones, exposure to free radicals from environmental toxins, and biological processes like glycosylation, methylation, apoptosis, the immune system, DNA damage, and genetics.
