Tragedy at Sea: Senegalese Navy Discovers Boat with 30 Bodies Off Dakar Coast
On Sunday, the Senegalese Navy made a devastating discovery, finding a boat stranded dozens of kilometers off the coast of Dakar with at least 30 bodies on board, the army announced.
According to the Senegalese army, investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the boat and the total toll of the tragedy. The army stated on social media, “30 bodies have been counted so far,” and efforts are being made to identify the victims.
Unfortunately, incidents like this are not uncommon off the coast of Senegal, often resulting from attempts at illegal immigration to Europe.
The Senegalese Navy was alerted on Sunday afternoon to a boat running aground approximately 70 kilometers off the coast of Dakar, with reports of “several bodies” on board. A patrol boat was dispatched to the area and towed the vessel towards the port of Dakar, arriving on Monday morning at 6:00 am local time.
The recovery, identification, and transport of the bodies are being handled with sensitivity due to their advanced state of decomposition. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks and dangers associated with illegal immigration.
