Violence erupted in the Australian town of Alice Springs on Thursday night following the arrest of a man in connection with the death of a five-year-old girl, Kumanjayi Little Baby, as she is now known at the request of her family for cultural reasons. Multiple emergency service personnel were injured during the unrest, which took place outside Alice Springs Hospital where the suspect was being treated.
According to reports, more than 100 people gathered in the streets after Jefferson Lewis, 47, was apprehended by police. Lewis was last seen with Kumanjayi Little Baby and was apprehended after being beaten by vigilantes and taken to Alice Springs Hospital. Shops were reportedly looted and rocks were thrown at police during the riot, prompting officers to retaliate with tear gas.
Many of the rioters were reportedly accusing police of protecting the suspect and chanting for “payback,” a term for traditional punishment under Aboriginal law in Central Australia, as reported by ABC News.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole stated on Friday that his thoughts were with the police, ambulance, and fire and rescue officers who were injured during the unrest, with many requiring medical treatment, including stitches for head injuries.
Lewis has since been moved to Darwin for safety reasons, following his arrest at a residence in Alice Springs hours after Kumanjayi Little Baby’s body was found.
Kumanjayi Little Baby’s family is seeking solace in their faith following the discovery of her body. The family requested that the girl be referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby for cultural reasons.
Police have condemned the actions of the rioters and have stated they will be charging individuals involved in the unrest. The investigation into Kumanjayi Little Baby’s death is ongoing.
