Hospitals Overwhelmed: Patients Face Long Waits amidst Staffing Shortages
Hampshire Hospitals Plea for Public Support as Emergency Rooms Reach Capacity
Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is urging teh public to consider option care options as both of its hospitals, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital, are operating at full capacity.
the trust issued a statement warning of “extremely high” attendance at emergency departments, leading to long wait times for patients with non-life-threatening conditions.
“Beds across both hospitals are full and attendance at our emergency departments is extremely high,” the statement read.
Patients are advised to explore alternatives to the emergency room, such as calling the NHS 111 helpline, contacting their general practitioner, visiting a pharmacy, or seeking care at an urgent treatment center.
“Only go to the emergency department for a life-threatening illness or injury,” the trust emphasized.
The strain on the hospitals is partly attributed to a high number of patients who could be cared for at home.
“A considerable number of beds are being used to care for individuals who would be more pleasant recuperating in a home setting,” said julie Dawes, chief nurse for Hampshire Hospitals.
Dawes appealed to the public for assistance, encouraging families to collect loved ones who are medically stable and ready for discharge.
“Our ward teams can definitely help with medication or equipment so if you can, please have the conversation and collect loved ones,” Dawes said. “This will free up capacity for someone who is in need of hospital treatment and care.”
The trust acknowledged the dedication of its staff, stating they are “doing all we can” to increase capacity and thanked the public for their patience during this challenging time.
