Ser Roderick Dustin, the veteran Northern warrior known as “Roddy the Ruin,” met his end during the siege of Tumbleton in the season 3 finale of House of the Dragon. Portrayed by Tommy Flanagan, Dustin died by dragonfire shortly after killing Ormund Hightower.

The Tradition of the Winter Wolves

Dustin was a member of the Winter Wolves, a group of older men bound by a grim Northern tradition. According to Polygon, these warriors seek death in battle to ensure that limited resources are preserved for younger generations during the region’s harsh winters.

Throughout the third season, Dustin served as a staunch supporter of Team Black. He participated in engagements like the Butcher’s Ball, driven by a growing desire to die in a manner he considered glorious.

The Assault on Tumbleton

When the attack on Tumbleton began, Daemon Targaryen tasked Dustin and the Winter Wolves with penetrating the town to open the gates for the main army. The mission was fraught with political risk; Ormund Hightower had used young boys as human shields to deter attackers. Dustin’s objective was to minimize unnecessary casualties to protect Rhaenyra’s public image as a ruler.

The stakes were clear in the exchange between Daemon and Dustin before the assault. When Daemon told him, You are not to die until you open the gate, Dustin responded, Aye, gate open, then die.

A Brutal Victory

Dustin succeeded. He reached the gates and led his men into the town.

The ensuing confrontation with Ormund Hightower was visceral. During the fight, Dustin lost an arm. He secured the killing blow in a moment of chaos: Dustin accidentally sprayed blood into Hightower’s mouth, causing the man to retch and leaving him vulnerable to a dagger strike.
