WASHINGTON – Two House Republicans have initiated an investigation into how the California-based charity⁢ FireAid utilized a $500,000 grant intended for victims of the 2022 Palisades and Eaton⁢ fires. The inquiry, launched on Wednesday, September 8, 2025, also comes amid heightened political scrutiny of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been a frequent target of criticism from former President Donald ‌Trump and⁤ other ⁤Republicans.

Investigation Details and Allegations

Representatives Anna Paulina Luna⁣ (R-FL) ‍and Eli Crane (R-AZ) are leading the investigation, requesting‌ documents from FireAid related to the grant and its ⁣spending.A⁢ letter from ⁤the representatives to FireAid alleges⁢ potential misuse of⁤ funds‌ and raises questions about the association’s financial accountability. The letter specifically mentions Newsom’s office, suggesting a possible connection, though the ‌nature of that‍ connection remains unclear. The investigation expands on earlier scrutiny from‌ Senate Republicans.

The $500,000 grant was allocated to FireAid to provide aid to individuals ‍and communities affected⁤ by ‍the Palisades Fire, wich burned in August 2022, and ⁣the Eaton⁢ Fire, which occurred in September 2022. The Palisades Fire scorched over 1,800 acres in ⁢Los Angeles, while⁣ the Eaton Fire burned ‌over 17,000 acres in Riverside County. Both fires resulted in meaningful property damage ⁤and displacement of residents.

FireAid’s Response and Self-reliant Audits

In response to the criticism, FireAid commissioned two independent audit reports. A review conducted by the law⁣ firm Latham &⁢ Watkins found ‍no evidence of fraud or misuse‍ of funds. The reports ⁣were ⁣submitted to local and federal officials, ⁣including the Department of Justice.

“The law firm conducted an independent review of the charity, and shared ‌conclusive findings affirming that FireAid has acted‌ in accordance with mission, has strong accountability ⁤measures and aid is reaching affected ‌communities,” FireAid stated in a⁤ press release following the release of the audit findings. ⁤The organization maintains its commitment to transparency and responsible stewardship of donations.

Political Context and Newsom’s⁢ Potential Presidential Run

The timing of the investigation is notable, coinciding with increased⁢ political attacks on Governor ⁢Newsom. He is frequently targeted by Trump and Republicans, particularly as speculation grows regarding a potential ‍presidential run in 2028.⁣ The investigation‌ could be seen as an attempt to damage Newsom’s reputation and⁢ create political headwinds ‍should he decide to seek the presidency.
