On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the Houston Rockets (40-25) faced off against the Phoenix Suns (30-35) in a pivotal Western Conference matchup. The Suns are desperately seeking wins as they fight for a spot in the play-in tournament.
Suns Seek Much-Needed Win Against Rockets
The phoenix Suns entered the game against the Houston Rockets needing a victory to bolster their playoff aspirations. The Suns have been inconsistent, alternating wins and losses in their last seven games.
Adding to the intrigue, the Houston Rockets possess the right to swap 2025 first-round picks with the Suns. Therefore, a Phoenix loss would benefit Houston’s future draft outlook. As noted, as Houston owns the right to swap 2025 first-round picks with the suns, Phoenix (30-35, no. 11 in Western Conference standings) missing the playoffs would be very beneficial to the Rockets.
The Rockets are also chasing the Memphis grizzlies in the standings. A Suns loss would help Houston close the gap.
Phoenix’s Future and Kevin Durant’s Value
The possibility of a pick swap, combined with Houston owning Phoenix’s unprotected 2027 first-round pick, has generated significant discussion. Despite their current struggles, the Phoenix front office insists they are not tanking. With stars like Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, a complete teardown seems unlikely.
However, the Suns’ record of 30-35,coupled with the league’s highest payroll, raises questions about their long-term strategy. While a play-in tournament berth remains a possibility, the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks face their own challenges.
There’s speculation about Kevin Durant’s future with the Suns, especially after trade discussions at the deadline. With Durant turning 37 next season and having only one year left on his contract, his appeal is primarily short-term. Consequently, the perceived value gap might be too wide to bridge. Potential suitors like Denver, Minnesota, and oklahoma City could enter a bidding war, with OKC potentially offering the draft capital to entice Phoenix.
