Ground Clashes Escalate Near Hodeidah
Onshore fighting between Houthi rebels and government-aligned forces resulted in 16 deaths among pro-government troops south of Hodeidah, according to two medical officials cited by AFP. Hospitals in the area received 22 wounded soldiers following clashes that began late on Friday. An officer with the government-aligned forces described the event as the deadliest Houthi attack in years, noting that the Iran-backed group briefly seized pro-government positions before a counterattack concluded at dawn on Saturday.
Medical and military sources stated that the rebels utilized snipers to account for most of the casualties, alongside drone and mortar salvos. Another military official reported casualties among Houthi ranks but provided no specific numbers. The fighting breaks a largely frozen dynamic maintained since a United Nations-negotiated truce in 2022 across the conflict-torn Arab country.
Red Sea Shipping and Regional Threats
Separately, the British military reported a maritime incident on Sunday off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center stated that a cargo ship 30 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah reported being under attack by unknown armed assailants in a skiff who opened fire. Security guards returned fire before the attackers retreated to a larger ship with its automatic identification system switched off. The cargo ship and its crew were reported safe, and authorities are investigating.
On Friday, the rebel group issued threats against airports and vital assets belonging to Saudi Arabia, a key backer of the Aden-based government. The group accused Riyadh of trying to block an Iranian plane from landing, tying the regional maritime actions directly to broader geopolitical friction involving Iran.
