CROMWELL, conn. – Viktor Hovland, a prominent name in golf, pulled out of the Travelers Championship on Sunday after experiencing neck soreness. The discomfort arose during warm-ups and intensified after just two holes of play.
Hovland was not the only golfer to leave the PGA Tour’s signature event early. Eric Cole, previously tied for 14th, withdrew before the round due to illness. Matti Schmid also withdrew after playing four holes.
Hovland described the onset of his injury. he said he felt fine during his initial warm-up, but upon hitting a couple of drives, he felt somthing amiss in his neck.
“It felt fine, didn’t feel hardly anything at all, just felt like something was maybe brewing,” Hovland said. “Then the next shot that I hit with a driver it just felt like … it just cracked. I don’t know exactly what happened, but there’s something that happened and just couldn’t move.”
The golfer added that he could barely position himself over the ball or move his neck, leading to his decision to withdraw. His departure reduced his group with Scottie Scheffler to a twosome.
