By contrast, islands that remained free of foxes retained vastly different environmental conditions. These undisturbed locations supported far more seabirds, produced richer soil, and maintained much higher concentrations of native grasses.
Severing the Marine Nutrient Pipeline
The fundamental driver of this ecological shift was the disruption of marine nutrient transport. Researchers discovered that foxes preyed heavily on seabirds nesting across the island chain.
By reducing seabird populations, the introduced predators cut off the natural flow of nutrient-rich guano from the ocean to the land.
Without this vital marine fertilizer, the soil composition on the affected islands changed drastically over time, favoring hardy shrubs over nutrient-demanding grasses.
