The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on April 6, 2026, reveals that astrocytes—star-shaped glial cells—act as critical middlemen in the process of suppressing hunger.
For decades, neuroscience research focused primarily on neurons as the brain’s primary signaling cells for appetite. However, this new discovery indicates that astrocytes, which were long considered mere support cells, play an active role in the central regulation of energy metabolism.
The Mechanism of the Fullness Signal
The identified pathway is located in the hypothalamus, the region of the brain responsible for sensing nutrients and nutritional hormones and executing behavioral responses to maintain energy homeostasis.
According to the research, the process begins after a meal when glucose triggers tanycytes. These cells then send signals to astrocytes, which in turn activate the neurons responsible for signaling fullness.
This sequence establishes astrocytes as a vital link between glucose-sensing cells and the neurons that tell the body to stop eating.
Collaborative Research and Implications
The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Concepción in Chile in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Maryland.
Ricardo Araneda, a professor in the University of Maryland’s Department of Biology and a corresponding author of the study, noted that people typically associate brain function immediately with neurons.
By uncovering this “hidden brain switch,” scientists have exposed a long-standing blind spot in appetite and obesity research.
The discovery of this specific pathway may provide a foundation for the development of innovative treatments for eating disorders, and obesity.
The Role of Astrocytes in Metabolic Health
Astrocytes are a type of glial cell. While they were once viewed as providing structural and metabolic support to neurons, evidence now suggests they are integral to how the brain processes nutritional information.
The hypothalamus serves as the primary center for signal processing of nutrients. When the signaling pathway involving astrocytes is functioning, it helps the brain decide when the stomach is full and hunger should be suppressed.
