Conscious experience emerges from a continuous, rhythmic dialogue between the brain and body rather than being produced by the brain alone, according to a study published in Neuroscience of Consciousness. The research team, led by investigators at the University of California, Santa Barbara, examined how visceral signals from the heart, lungs, and stomach help coordinate neural activity and shape perception, emotion, and the sense of self.

Heartbeat and Breath as Neural Drumbeats

Language often treats thoughts and emotions as physical events through everyday idioms like a racing heart or butterflies in the stomach. According to Asa Young, a doctoral student in psychological and brain sciences and the paper’s first author, the new findings suggest these expressions reflect a genuine physiological reality. The brain does not simply receive passive messages from bodily organs. Instead, regular and predictable signals from the heartbeat, breath, and gastric rhythm act as drumbeats that establish when groups of neurons become more or less receptive to incoming information. Just as musicians coordinate their playing across different parts, brain rhythms organize themselves around slower bodily cycles, as explained by Young. This ongoing synchronization helps align neural processes involved in perception and identity with the body’s internal state regulation. Memory recall also fluctuates with this cycle; people demonstrate better recognition of previously viewed pictures when those images appear during an inhalation rather than an exhalation, while individuals naturally tend to inhale right before starting a cognitive task.

The Relationship Between Signals

Timing plays a critical role in how the body influences conscious awareness. Frightening images gain faster access to conscious awareness during the contraction phase of the heartbeat, whereas neutral stimuli, including sights, sounds, touch, and pain, may face reduced processing strength during that same cardiac window. The researchers point out that the overall relationship between signals matters more than any single measurement in isolation. Two individuals might share identical heart rates while exhibiting major differences in how strongly their cardiac signals influence actual brain activity. Measuring this dynamic interplay can reveal functional differences that neither the brain waves nor the heart rhythm show independently.

Implications for Mental Health and Consciousness

Healthy functioning depends on the brain and body staying coordinated within a specific range, according to the study. Both unusually weak and unusually strong bodily influences on neural activity have links to adverse health states. There is a popular intuition that mental illness is not solely mental, just as bodily dysfunction is not confined to the body. Asa Young, University of California, Santa Barbara Anxiety-related conditions can feature bodily signals that become unusually salient and hard to ignore, while depression may display reduced sensitivity to internal signals alongside a diminished connection to the physical body. Other disorders may involve atypical timing, strength, or flexibility in the exchange between the brain and peripheral organs. These findings complicate science-fiction concepts like a brain kept alive in a vat, which could still generate neural activity while remaining completely cut off from the recurring visceral signals that anchor consciousness to a living organism. According to the research team, conscious experience ultimately arises from the ongoing relationship between the two rather than either entity acting alone.
