Origins of the Kettering Satellite Tracking Group
The amateur tracking effort started in 1960 when Kettering Grammar School science teacher Geoff Perry teamed up with chemistry master Derek Slater, an amateur radio enthusiast, to listen for signals from newly orbiting satellites. Space exploration was in its infancy during the height of the Cold War, and the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a tense space race. Using basic radio equipment, the two teachers managed to track signals from early Soviet missions including Sputnik 4 and Cosmos 4, according to historical reporting from the Northants Telegraph. By 1964, Perry and Slater integrated students into the project to teach them about signals and space technology. Sixth-form girls from Kettering High School who attended the grammar school for physics classes made regular observations during their free periods, noting times on the classroom blackboard when satellites passed overhead, as reported by the Northants Telegraph.
Discovering the Secret Arctic Launch Site
In 1966, the school group detected anomalies while monitoring the launch of Cosmos 112. According to reporting by NorthantsLive, the launch angle was offset and the signal duration was significantly shorter than previous flights, indicating that the vehicle was launched from a location much further north than any known Soviet facility. Using triangulation data from subsequent launches like Cosmos 129, Perry calculated that the secret site was situated over 2,000 kilometers northwest of established Soviet launch installations, placing it near the Arctic Circle. Perry submitted his findings and coordinates to Flight International magazine in London, gaining international recognition once Cosmos 129 confirmed the calculations.
International Recognition and Later Years
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Kettering group regularly outperformed intelligence agencies by detecting secret space missions before official announcements. In 1967, after tracking Cosmos 186 ahead of Soviet authorities, the pupils received a telegram from then British Minister of Technology Tony Benn. During the 1971 Apollo 15 mission, Perry served as a studio expert for ITV and later worked as a space consultant for ITN. The school group also monitored the manned Soyuz II spacecraft in 1971, recording its final signals hours before the official Tass news agency reported the deaths of its three cosmonauts, according to the Northants Telegraph. In 1977, the United States Senate publicly praised the group for releasing details regarding a network of Russian ‘spy’ satellites. Perry was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1973 and passed away in January 2000 at the age of 72.
