Researchers observed that the primates target lizards, rodents, and birds during leaner months, a behavioral pattern that scientists suggest could offer valuable windows into how early human ancestors adapted their diets when preferred resources dwindled.
Thousands of Hours of Fieldwork Track Primate Foraging
Fieldwork conducted from May 2006 to December 2010 at Fazenda Boa Vista involved tracking two separate groups of bearded capuchins across 5,093 hours of observation. According to co-lead author Noemi Spagnoletti, researchers aimed to reach the monkeys by 7 a.m. and shadowed them until sunset to document their daily foraging habits. The team recorded 446 instances of vertebrate consumption during the study window.
Resource Scarcity Drives Higher Predation Rates
The research revealed distinct contrasts between how different capuchin troops managed their food intake. Monkeys in the group that had to find all of their own food hunted vertebrates about 1.9 times as often as a second group that received daily supplemental provisions of nuts, corn, and water as part of an independent project. Furthermore, predation rates rose when seasonal fruit availability dropped.
I was most astonished by how deeply hunting vertebrate prey had become woven into the everyday routines of the capuchins. When my observations of them originally began, tool use was my primary focus, and anticipating that vertebrate hunting would evolve into such a major component of our records never crossed my mind.

Lizards, Rodents, and New Prey Additions
Of the 281 dietary events where researchers logged specific prey types, lizards and rodents made up the majority of the captures. The monkeys also consumed snakes, bats, marsupials, and birds. According to the study findings, these observations mark the first documented records of bearded capuchins eating opossums, iguanas, bird eggs, and nestlings.
Anatomical Preferences and Hunting by Gender
When consuming their catch, the capuchins displayed specific anatomical preferences. Researchers noted that the monkeys frequently started with nutrient-dense portions like the brain and internal organs before tackling tougher muscle tissue. For lizards and geckos, the animals ate almost the entire creature, including skin, appendages, and internal organs. When capturing birds, they often ate nearly the entire animal, while mammal consumption frequently focused on tails, paws, and eyes. Males hunted more frequently than females and represented the exclusive group observed eating snakes, which they typically decapitated before eating.
Parallels to Early Human Ancestor Diets
Scientists emphasize that while capuchins cannot provide an exact mirror for hominin diets, their behavior demonstrates how a primarily plant-eating primate shifts toward hunting when staple foods run low. Fossil sites dating back roughly two million years show evidence that early human ancestors also consumed small animals. The research team aims to compare the bone modification marks left by modern capuchins with those found on ancient hominin fossil sites in future analyses.
