Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, researchers discovered that canines do not merely sense mood; they can distinguish between specific negative human emotions, including anger, sadness, and fear.

The Left Temporal Cortex and Emotional Mapping

The research pinpoints the canine left temporal cortex as the primary engine of this activity. Data from the iScience paper reveals this region responds more strongly to human faces than to those of other dogs. When dogs viewed human faces displaying emotion—as opposed to neutral expressions—researchers noted a surge of activity across the amygdala, hippocampus, and caudate.
