Regular physical activity is increasingly recognized as a critical component in maintaining cognitive function and preserving brain health as people age. Recent research and public health guidance emphasize that both aerobic and anaerobic exercises contribute to brain plasticity and the prevention of cognitive decline.

According to an expert review published January 9, 2026, in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, different types of exercise impact the brain in distinct ways. Aerobic activities, such as cycling and running, are linked to increased gray matter volume in the temporal lobe and cerebellum.

These aerobic exercises enhance brain plasticity by upregulating serotonin systems and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which also increases the density of connections within the motor areas and the frontal regions of the brain.

The Role of Anaerobic and Strength Training

While aerobic exercise targets specific lobes and connectivity, anaerobic exercise—such as weightlifting—provides different neurological benefits. Research indicates that anaerobic training primarily increases gray matter volume in the basal ganglia.

Immediate and Long-Term Cognitive Benefits

The benefits of physical activity are not solely long-term. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that short bursts of physical activity can provide immediate boosts to thinking skills and memory.

Some benefits to brain health can begin immediately following a session of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Regular engagement in these activities can improve a person’s ability to learn, problem-solve, and maintain emotional balance, while reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Over the long term, consistent exercise serves as a strategy to counteract the brain health decline typically associated with aging. Evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggests these benefits apply to both cognitively impaired and unimpaired older individuals.

Preventing Cognitive Decline and Dementia

Physical activity is recognized as a tool for reducing the risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans identifies the prevention of dementia as a specific benefit of participating in moderate to vigorous intensity activity.

Examples of such activities include:

  • Brisk walking
  • Swimming
  • Dancing
  • Performing household chores

While the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, researchers suggest these protective effects may be driven by hormonal changes and alterations in brain volume.

Recommended Activity Levels for Brain Health

Public health guidelines suggest that any amount of physical activity is beneficial, regardless of an individual’s age or fitness level. However, to achieve the most significant health benefits, adults are encouraged to meet specific weekly targets.

The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity. These durations do not need to be completed in a single session; they can be broken into smaller increments, such as 22 minutes daily.

These recommendations are supported by findings from National Institute on Aging (NIA) researchers, who measured cardiorespiratory fitness in a group of 125 cognitively unimpaired adults ranging in age from 22 to 94 to study the impact of lifelong exercise on brain health.
