How Nutritional Counseling Reduces Frailty in Home Care Adults: Key Study Findings

How Nutritional Counseling Reduces Frailty in Home Care Adults: Key Study Findings

November 25, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

A new study shows that personalized nutritional counseling can reduce frailty in vulnerable adults receiving home care. The study emphasizes that treating frailty and ensuring older adults receive enough protein and calories should be a priority.

Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) often occurs when individuals do not get sufficient protein, energy, and other nutrients. This study, published on November 23 in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, focused on home care clients and their nutritional needs.

The researchers involved 90 participants at risk for PEM, with an average age of 83.9 years, in the intervention group. They also had a control group of 55 people, averaging 84.3 years old. Blood tests were used to evaluate the participants’ PEM status.

Participants in the intervention group received customized nutritional counseling and conventional food items. Initially, 74.4% of this group was frail. After six months, frailty prevalence decreased to 61.1%. In contrast, the control group started with a frailty rate of 74.5%, which rose to 80% after six months.

This study highlights the importance of addressing nutritional deficiencies to help vulnerable older adults maintain their health and reduce the risk of frailty. The findings can inform strategies for improving care for this population.
