Teen gambling is rising rapidly due to increased exposure to sports betting and prediction markets, with many parents unaware of the risks their children face, according to a MarketWatch report published April 26, 2026.

The report highlights how digital platforms have made gambling-like experiences easily accessible to youth through video and mobile games featuring loot boxes, digital treasure chests containing randomized virtual items such as character skins or weapons. These mechanics, found in popular games like FIFA, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Clash Royale, mimic gambling by offering unpredictable rewards in exchange for real or in-game currency.

Beyond gaming, casino-style apps offering poker, slot machines, and blackjack—many free to download but encouraging purchases of in-app currency—further normalize gambling behaviors. Similarly, gacha games, which function as virtual vending machines where players spend currency to randomly obtain items, reinforce habits similar to gambling through repeated pulling or spinning mechanics.

Online fantasy sports platforms and social media also play a significant role, as influencers on TikTok, YouTube, and other apps promote betting platforms, share tips on placing bets, and stream their own gambling activities. Sports betting ads during televised games, characterized by flashy colors and text, frequently reach young audiences and contribute to the normalization of wagering.

Experts note that adolescents are especially vulnerable to developing gambling problems because gambling triggers the release of dopamine, the brain’s feel-good chemical. Repeated exposure can lead to tolerance, requiring more frequent or higher-stakes betting to achieve the same effect, mirroring patterns seen in substance use disorders.

To mitigate these risks, prevention resources recommend that parents teach and model healthy coping strategies such as exercising, practicing mindfulness, and maintaining strong connections with friends and family. Open conversations about the dangers of gambling, monitoring online activity, and recognizing early signs of problematic behavior are also emphasized as key protective measures.

Organizations including the National Council on Problem Gambling lead awareness campaigns each March during Problem Gambling Awareness Month to increase public understanding, promote prevention, and connect families with support resources. Additional guidance from health and child development experts underscores the importance of parental involvement in identifying and addressing youth exposure to gambling-like content before habits become entrenched.
