Increased physical activity among teenagers predicts a measurable drop in insomnia symptoms six months later, according to new research published in the journal Sleep Health.

Tracking 1,988 Chinese Middle School Students Across Three Waves

The study enrolled participants from five middle schools in Hubei, China, where students had an average age of 13.79 years and 54.5% were boys. Researchers followed a three-wave longitudinal design to track students at three separate time points spaced six months apart. Each interval assessed physical activity, negative overthinking, and insomnia symptoms to determine how changes in behavior and sleep influenced each other over time.

Global prevalence estimates for teenage sleep disturbances range from 14% to 68% worldwide, sitting around 26% in China. Academic demands and sleep deprivation are particularly high in this student population, making the investigation of protective factors crucial for adolescent development. During the teenage years, proper sleep is essential for physical strength, brain development, immune function, and emotional well-being.

Exercise Outperforms Poor Sleep in Longitudinal Panel Models

Initial statistical evaluations pointed in both directions, suggesting exercise could improve sleep while poor sleep could simultaneously reduce activity levels. That initial bidirectional link vanished once researchers applied an advanced cross-lagged panel model that accounted for stable differences between individual students. Only one causal direction remained intact after controlling for those individual variables.

Physical activity predicted fewer insomnia symptoms six months later, whereas poor sleep did not predict a subsequent drop in exercise habits. The data also revealed that exercise led to a distinct drop in unhelpful mental habits like rumination—dwelling on negative feelings—and catastrophizing, which involves expecting the worst possible outcome.

Gender Differences Emerge in Cognitive Emotion Regulation

The study identified notable differences in how physical activity impacts boys and girls regarding cognitive emotion regulation. More physical activity at the start of the study predicted significantly less negative overthinking six months later among female participants, but the same association did not appear in boys.

Male participants demonstrated a different behavioral pathway connecting thought patterns to rest disturbances. Higher negative overthinking at the six-month mark predicted worse insomnia symptoms later in boys, an association that was absent among the girls in the study cohort.

Researchers Urge Caution over Modest Exercise Effects

Because the observed protective effect of exercise on adolescent sleep was modest, the researchers urged caution when interpreting the results.
