Researchers have identified a shared neural fingerprint produced by five different psychedelic drugs in the human brain, revealing a common impact on brain behavior despite the substances having different chemistries. The study, published in Nature Medicine by Girn et al. In 2026, analyzed the effects of LSD, psilocybin, DMT, mescaline, and ayahuasca.

The discovery indicates that these mind-altering substances share a hallmark signature in how they temporarily rewire the brain. This finding is particularly significant as it marks the first time these five psychedelics have been analyzed together to determine their collective impact on neurological function.

The Mechanics of the Psychedelic Trip

The research found that the five drugs share a common ability to disrupt the standard organization of the brain. According to Dr. Danilo Bzdok, a senior author on the study from McGill University, these substances dissolve the common order, the usual hierarchy of brain systems.

By flattening this hierarchy, the drugs alter how the brain functions. Dr. Bzdok noted that this process probably underlies what some people describe as this raw access to one’s own consciousness.
