SpaceX wants to launch one million new satellites into orbit to serve as data centres for artificial intelligence computing power, according to filings submitted to the United States Federal Communications Commission and reported by The Independent and The Conversation. Researchers warn this massive expansion of low-Earth orbit megaconstellations will dramatically alter the night sky, potentially outnumbering visible stars and disrupting astronomical observations worldwide.

Megaconstellation Expansion and Orbital AI Data Centres

More than 10,000 Starlink satellites currently orbit the Earth, regularly crossing dark skies and streaking through research telescope images. SpaceX’s newly proposed constellation aims to place one million additional satellites into much higher orbits to handle heavy AI workloads, according to analysis published by The Conversation. Unlike previous iterations, these higher-altitude platforms will remain visible for longer periods throughout the night. SpaceX has provided only bare-bones information in its initial filings with the Federal Communications Commission. Researchers note that ground-based data centres face growing criticism for massive water and electricity consumption. Predicting the Impact on the Night Sky

To understand the scale of the disruption, researchers built updated simulations using orbital data from astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell’s website, aligning with the limited specifications found in the SpaceX filing. By scaling brightness models based on size jumps between Starlink V1, V2, and predicted V3 hardware, the team modelled how one million orbital data centres would compare to previously approved megaconstellations. Previous models by Lawler et al. in 2022 examined 65,000 satellites across four planned megaconstellations—including SpaceX’s Starlink, Amazon’s Kuiper, the United Kingdom’s OneWeb, and China’s Guowang—predicting that one in 15 visible points in the night sky would be an artificial satellite. The new simulation for a million-satellite constellation shows that artificial objects will completely overwhelm natural stars for large portions of the night and year across the globe. If we permit SpaceX to launch these satellites, we will see more satellites than stars — for large portions of the night and the year, throughout the world. This will severely damage the night sky for everyone on Earth. — The Conversation The human eye can detect fewer than 4,500 stars in an unpolluted night sky. Under the proposed million-satellite framework, the number of naked-eye visible satellites would jump into the tens of thousands, rendering natural constellations difficult to distinguish. Furthermore, researchers emphasize that this projection excludes additional large satellite systems filed with the International Telecommunication Union by various national governments in recent years.

Unresolved Regulatory and Environmental Concerns

The Conversation reports that SpaceX’s filing fails to account for collision risks in congested orbital pathways, increasing levels of atmospheric pollution from burning space hardware, and the unproven technology required to safely disperse waste heat generated by orbital computing clusters.
