The study, funded in part by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and published on August 21, 2019, in Nature, compared men with high brown fat activity against those with low activity at normal room temperatures. The research provided key insights into how brown fat affects the body’s metabolism and identified potential targets for treating metabolic disorders.

While research continues into how to effectively increase brown fat levels—including reports suggesting significant increases in brown fat and improved lipid metabolism—cooling the body remains one of the most likely effective methods for activation.
