These proposals address the long-term risk of the sun’s increasing luminosity, which will eventually cause Earth’s oceans to evaporate and terminate the biosphere.

The sun is a main-sequence star that gradually increases in brightness as it fuses hydrogen into helium in its core. This process increases the core’s temperature and pressure, accelerating the rate of fusion and raising the total energy output. According to astrophysical models, this trend will eventually push Earth beyond the circumstellar habitable zone, the region where liquid water can exist on a planetary surface.

Current scientific projections suggest the sun’s luminosity increases by approximately 10 percent every billion years. This gradual heating leads to a positive feedback loop where rising temperatures increase atmospheric CO2 levels, further accelerating the greenhouse effect.

To counter this, researchers have proposed several high-scale technological interventions. One primary method involves the use of gravity assists from passing celestial bodies to migrate Earth further away from the sun. By maneuvering large asteroids or comets to fly close to Earth, the planet’s orbital velocity could be slightly altered, pushing it into a wider, cooler orbit.

Another theoretical approach focuses on managing the sun’s own energy output. This involves stellar engineering concepts, such as the deployment of massive solar shades or “star-shades” at the L1 Lagrange point. These structures would block a fraction of the solar radiation reaching Earth, effectively simulating a dimmer sun and stabilizing surface temperatures.

The feasibility of these methods depends on the development of propulsion systems and material sciences far beyond current capabilities. Moving a planet requires the manipulation of mass on a scale that current chemical or ion propulsion cannot achieve. Similarly, constructing a shade large enough to impact planetary temperature would require the mining and processing of entire asteroids.

Phys.org notes that while these solutions are currently speculative, they represent the only theoretical pathways for a civilization to survive the sun’s transition into a red giant. In the final stages of the sun’s life, it will expand and likely engulf the inner planets, including Earth, regardless of orbital shifts.

The timeline for these interventions is measured in hundreds of millions of years. The primary concern for the immediate geological future is the “moist greenhouse” phase, where the atmosphere becomes saturated with water vapor, allowing solar radiation to break water molecules apart and let hydrogen escape into space.

These theoretical safeguards contrast with the more immediate challenge of anthropogenic climate change. While stellar engineering targets the inevitable evolution of the sun, current planetary science focuses on the stability of the current climate system and the prevention of runaway greenhouse effects caused by industrial emissions.
