Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player, ⁢arrives ‌in Pittsburgh as a notable favorite. Following⁤ a recent victory, ⁣Scheffler⁣ appears to be peaking at ⁢the opportune moment.

Rory McIlroy, despite ⁣recent struggles after completing the career Grand Slam at the Masters, remains a contender. His driving distance and ability to escape difficult lies could prove beneficial ‌at Oakmont.

Bryson DeChambeau, the defending U.S. Open ⁢champion, seeks to retain⁣ his title.DeChambeau has consistently contended in major championships, making him a threat at ‍Oakmont.

Other notable players include Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Jon‍ Rahm, Justin Thomas, ‍and Sepp Straka, all poised to challenge⁤ the favorites.

Oakmont Country Club: A Stern Test

Established in 1903, ‌Oakmont Country Club is hosting⁣ its tenth U.S. Open, making it the most frequent venue for the championship. Designed by Henry Fownes,‌ the course is intentionally challenging. Fownes⁢ famously stated that ‍a poorly executed shot “should be a shot ‌irrevocably lost.”

Oakmont’s⁢ difficulty stems from its ⁢fast, sloping greens. ⁢Sam Snead once joked that the greens were so slick,a dime used as‍ a ball ⁣marker⁤ would slide away.

Many greens slope from front to back, requiring players to navigate approach shots where⁢ the green moves away ⁤from the fairway. Accuracy ‍off the tee is crucial, as ⁤the rough is thick and over five inches deep in places. Errant shots will likely require players to pitch back to ‍the fairway.

Deep bunkers and heavy‍ rough surround ‍the greens, further ⁢complicating matters. Dry conditions could exacerbate the challenge, making it ‍difficult to get up-and-down, even for skilled players.
