Anglesey’s Extravagant Life Takes center Stage in Chamber Musical

Henry Cyril Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey, laments in song that his life remains largely unknown. Paget,who died at 29,notoriously bankrupted his estate through lavish spending,including funding unpopular plays. His family, embarrassed by his behavior, attempted to erase him from history.
Seiriol Davies, who portrays Paget, first encountered the story of the cross-dressing Edwardian aristocrat during childhood visits to a National Trust property. Davies’ chamber musical about Paget debuted at the Edinburgh fringe nine years ago. Lisa Spirling directs this new production, which features a four-piece band led by Dylan Townley.
Davies, as Paget, dazzles in elaborate costumes under Hayley Grindle’s set design. The script and songs blend classical harmonies, dance sequences, and interactive comedy. A patter song referencing “boots and feathers” quickly covers Paget’s harsh boarding school years and his marriage to his cousin Lilian.
Matthew blake plays all other roles in Paget’s life, including Mr. Alexander Keith, a victorian impresario and Paget’s closest confidant. Keith, clad in a peach smoking jacket, tours with Paget’s unsuccessful shows.Paget’s artistic endeavors are portrayed as attempts to connect with others. Though, the musical struggles to fully convey Paget’s inner world.
While Paget’s loneliness is palpable, the musical’s sentimental moments feel forced. Although the show aims to restore Paget’s place in history, it comes across more as a statement than a genuine exploration of his life.
