Jiangmen, Guangdong – A new era of connectivity dawns in Guangdong province as the Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Channel officially opens to traffic tomorrow afternoon. This major infrastructure project, linking the cities of Zhuhai and Jiangmen, is expected to significantly reduce travel times and boost economic activity in the region.The channel,seen as a western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-macau Bridge,boasts cutting-edge technology designed to enhance safety and efficiency. Currently,the journey from Zhuhai to jiangmen takes over an hour.The new channel slashes this travel time in half, connecting the two cities in just 30 minutes.To celebrate its opening, the channel will be toll-free for an initial period, with detailed toll rates to be announced later.
The Huangmaohai Cross-Sea Channel marks a significant milestone as the third national-level cross-sea infrastructure project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, following the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge. Spanning 31 kilometers with six lanes in each direction, it seamlessly integrates with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and the Western Coastal Expressway of Guangdong, forming a direct transportation artery.Construction began in June 2020 and concluded last month, with a total investment of 13 billion yuan.
The opening of the channel is expected to have a ripple effect on transportation services, particularly direct bus routes between Hong kong and Jiangmen. Currently, over 50 daily bus services operate via the Shenzhen Bay port and the Shenzhen-zhongshan Bridge. With the new channel, these routes are anticipated to shift to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, perhaps leading to adjustments in ticket prices.
Zhang Jianping, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong-Guangdong Direct Bus association, expressed optimism about the channel’s impact on the industry. “We hope this bridge will boost business,” he said. “While the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-macau Bridge has higher tolls, ticket prices to western Guangdong are around 100 yuan. We believe there may not be much room for price reductions, but increased passenger flow could lead to more frequent services and potentially lower fares.”
Zhang noted that bus operators are still finalizing plans for new routes in light of the channel’s opening.
