Huawei Launches Mate XT 2 Tri-Fold Phone Powered by Kirin 9050 Pro Chip
Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled the Mate XT 2 tri-fold smartphone powered by the new Kirin 9050 Pro chip in Guangzhou on Sept. 7, 2026, marking the first time in six years that the company has introduced a new Kirin processor at a flagship product launch, according to state news agency Xinhua and the Global Times.
Kirin 9050 Pro Chip Architecture and Logic Folding Technology
The Kirin 9050 Pro is the first high-performance processor to utilize logic folding technology, as reported by Xinhua and the Global Times. According to Xinhua, the chip stacks logic units in layers within a single silicon die. This vertical stacking shortens signal transmission paths, cuts down latency, and boosts overall system performance.
The Global Times reported that the design resembles upgrading from a single-story apartment to a duplex, complete with vertical interconnects functioning like elevators. Liu Wei, director of the human-machine interaction and cognitive engineering laboratory at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, told the Global Times that the processor marks a major systemic innovation rather than a simple generational step, validating the Tau Scaling Law in a flagship terminal system on a chip.
Performance Metrics and Power Efficiency Gains

Data from the People’s Daily cited by the Global Times shows that transistor density on the Kirin 9050 Pro increased by roughly 55 percent compared to the previous Kirin 9030 Pro generation, climbing from about 155 million transistors to 238 million transistors per square millimeter. At comparable performance levels, neural processing unit power consumption dropped by 66 percent, graphics processing unit power consumption fell by 58 percent, and central processing unit performance-core power consumption decreased by 41 percent.
According to a research paper published on Sept. 4, 2026, by He Tingbo, Huawei semiconductor segment chief, measurements from the chip indicate higher transistor density paired with reduced power consumption across multiple key computing units. Xinhua noted that deep coordination across software, hardware, chips, and cloud-computing allows the Mate XT 2 to deliver overall performance 42 percent higher than its predecessor.
Research Investments and Market Position
Huawei’s wider business performance underscores its hardware rollout. Xinhua reported that the company’s research and development spending accelerated sharply to reach 121.38 billion yuan, equivalent to 17.9 billion U.S. dollars, during the first half of 2026. That figure represents a record high for the period and accounts for more than a quarter of total revenue.
Market data from IDC cited by Xinhua indicates that Huawei smartphone shipments grew 19.4 percent year on year in the second quarter of 2026. That growth lifted the company’s market share to 22.6 percent, placing it in the top position in China at a time when the broader industry faces commercial pressure.
