Huawei has officially launched its latest flagship smartphone lineup, the Pura 90 series, featuring a groundbreaking 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera and the new Kirin 9030S processor. The announcement, made on April 20, 2026, introduces three models: the standard Pura 90, the Pura 90 Pro, and the top-tier Pura 90 Pro Max, marking a significant advancement in mobile photography and AI integration.
The standout feature of the Pura 90 Pro Max is its world-first 200MP RYYB (Red-Yellow-Yellow-Blue) periscope telephoto sensor, which Huawei claims captures five times more light than the telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Paired with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor size, this technology is designed to deliver exceptional detail, particularly in low-light conditions. While the optical zoom is rated at 4x, Huawei uses computational photography to achieve what it describes as “optical-quality” zoom at up to 8x for still images and up to 20x for video.
The camera system also includes a 50MP primary sensor with a variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0, incorporating LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology to improve high dynamic range performance. A 40MP ultra-wide camera completes the rear array, supporting Huawei’s continued focus on computational photography and AI-driven image processing.
Powering the devices is Huawei’s homegrown Kirin 9030S chipset, which the company states is focused on artificial intelligence capabilities. The Pura 90 Pro Max further distinguishes itself with a 6,000 mAh battery, supporting extended usage despite the power demands of its advanced camera and AI features. Huawei has also made ambitious claims about network performance, positioning the series as a competitor to established flagship devices in terms of speed, and connectivity.
The launch comes amid reported cost pressures for Huawei, with executive Richard Yu warning of potential future price increases due to rising component and development expenses. Despite these challenges, the company has proceeded with the release of its latest camera-centric flagship lineup, emphasizing innovation in sensor technology and AI integration as key differentiators in the competitive smartphone market.
