Regulatory Action by the Advertising Standards Authority
British advertising regulators have banned a sponsored social media promotion for Huel meal replacement shakes after ruling that the content encouraged irresponsible dietary practices and made health claims. The Advertising Standards Authority issued its ruling targeting a video advertisement that featured brand ambassador Spencer Matthews discussing an ultramarathon runner who survived solely on the Hertfordshire-based company’s products.
The disputed video appeared across digital platforms as a sponsored Instagram post and a YouTube pre-roll advertisement. It featured Matthews speaking with Huel founder Julian Hearn in a podcast-style format. During the exchange, Matthews recounted meeting an athlete during a 260-kilometer race who exclusively consumed Huel and won the competition by a wide margin.
The Advertising Standards Authority received four complaints concerning the campaign. Two complainants challenged the material as irresponsible, while two others argued that the health claims violated the advertising code. Although the regulatory body acknowledged that the advert did not explicitly command consumers to replace all conventional food with the shakes, investigators concluded that viewers could reasonably interpret the anecdote as an endorsement of an acceptable and nutritionally appropriate dietary practice.

By presenting exclusive consumption of Huel in that context, the ads suggested that the complete replacement of conventional food with Huel was nutritionally appropriate and presented no barrier to achieving a high level of physical performance,
Company Response and Prior Regulatory Scrutiny
Huel defended the marketing campaign by pointing out that Matthews reacted with extreme skepticism when first told about the athlete’s diet. The company argued that the story was shared as a remarkable, unexpected occurrence rather than as an instruction for consumers to replicate. The company also noted that the Instagram caption explicitly stated that the founder's own routine does not involve replacing every meal.
Julian Hearn stated in the video that he consumes Huel products for breakfast and lunch during the working week while eating traditional meals at home. In its formal response to the watchdog, Huel maintained that the advertisement positioned the shakes as part of a balanced diet for occasions when preparing whole food was impractical.
This regulatory setback marks the latest instance of scrutiny for the brand. Huel has previously faced enforcement issues with the Advertising Standards Authority regarding the positioning of its products as substitutes for conventional meals. Some experts have also questioned the long-term effectiveness of replacing whole foods with vitamin-enriched liquid formulas.
Market Context and Ongoing Corporate Developments
The regulatory ruling arrives as the broader market for complete nutrition products continues to expand. Industry estimates value the global sector for these items, which target time-poor and health-conscious consumers, at $5.9bn (£4.4bn).
Huel, established by Hearn in 2015, is currently undergoing a major corporate transition. The Hertfordshire-based business is in the process of a €1bn takeover by French conglomerate Danone. Following the advertising watchdog’s decision, a Huel spokesperson confirmed to BBC News that the company had complied with the ruling. The representative reiterated that the brand does not position its shakes as a complete diet replacement or claim that consumption directly enhances athletic performance.
