Huey Lewis Determined to Overcome Hearing Loss, Return to Stage
Updated June 05, 2025
Huey Lewis, the frontman of Huey Lewis and the News, is sharing his experiences with severe hearing loss and his unwavering hope to perform and record again. Since 2018, Lewis has been absent from the stage after Meniere’s disease diagnosis forced him to cancel tour dates.
Meniere’s disease,an inner ear disorder, causes vertigo and hearing loss. Lewis first noticed symptoms during rehearsals, leading to his retirement from live shows. In 2018, he told Today, “I haven’t come to grips with the fact that I may never sing again.”
In a recent interview, Lewis revealed that a cochlear implant has improved his ability to hear speech. “I lost bilaterally, my hearing… the intense vertigo — knock on wood — I have kind of outgrown,” Lewis said. “I’m mildly dizzy all the time, and my hearing just went to zero. And now I have a cochlear implant, so I’m much better that way, but I can’t hear music.”
The inability to enjoy music is particularly tough for Lewis.”The worst part is that means it’s bad enough not to be able to perform and sing and play, but it’s really bad not to even be able to enjoy music,” he said.
Despite Huey Lewis’s hearing loss challenges,Huey Lewis and the News released ”Weather” in 2020,featuring tracks recorded before his diagnosis. While realistic about his prospects, Lewis remains hopeful. “I meen, I might get to where I can try to, and I’m not going to give up. I’m going to try.”
Lewis has stayed active in music, even with his inability to perform. A jukebox musical, the Heart of Rock and Roll, based on the band’s music, has been staged in San Diego and on Broadway. Lewis was also recently mentioned in the search for Michael J. Fox’s guitar from Back to the Future.
“But I’m never going to get there,” he conceded. “I mean, I might get to where I can try to, and I’m not going to give up. I’m going to try. But geez, that kind of fun, that kind of great ride.I doubt I’m ever going to see that … feel that again.”

What’s next
Lewis continues to explore treatments and therapies for meniere’s disease, hoping to find a way to return to performing and recording new music. His determination offers inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
