49ers add Bryce Huff to bolster pass rush

The San Francisco 49ers have acquired defensive end Bryce Huff from the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Huff, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal with Philadelphia in 2024, is expected to boost San Francisco’s pass rush.
Huff expressed his anticipation for the trade, hoping to land in san Francisco to reunite with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. He thrived under Saleh’s scheme with the New York Jets from 2021 to 2023, posting a league-best 21.8% pressure rate in 2023.
Last season in Philadelphia, Huff’s production dipped as he adjusted to a different defensive scheme. He recorded 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 12 games. Now with the 49ers, Huff aims to rediscover his previous form.
Kris Kocurek, 49ers defensive line coach, noted the difficulty of transitioning between defensive schemes. He highlighted the difference between playing with a hand in the dirt versus standing up as an outside linebacker.
Saleh emphasized Huff’s disruptive ability and quickness. He noted that Huff consistently pressures quarterbacks, forcing coordinators to account for his presence. Coach Kyle Shanahan compared Huff’s swift get-off to that of Dee Ford,who played with the team in 2019.

“I had a few places in mind that I definitely was hoping to get traded,” huff said. “All I was doing was just working out, just staying in my routine as best as possible. Waiting to here that call, and thankfully it was to San Francisco, because I’m very familiar with this scheme.”
