Teenager Sonny wakes up in a hospital bed after a car crash and realizes he believes the woman sitting beside him is not his mother. The eight-episode mystery series Phony
debuted on October 20, 2026, on Hulu just in time for Halloween, and follows Sonny launching a covert investigation into the woman he shares a home with. Connie Britton stars as Ellen, the mother and school principal whom Sonny suspects has been replaced by an imposter following his accident. Sam Nivola plays Sonny, a teenager trying to figure out his own identity while navigating the bizarre fracture in his family life.
Nick Paley created the series, wrote the first two episodes, and directed half of the first season. He executive produces alongside co-showrunner Anthony King, Connie Britton, Charlie Alderman of Charlie’s Production Company, and Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles. The show is produced by 20th Television. The series blends humor with supernatural and sci-fi elements, keeping viewers locked inside Sonny’s growing uncertainty about his mother’s true identity.
The Investigation Into Ellen
While Sonny suspects that Ellen has been swapped out for a stranger, Ellen remains focused on helping her son recover from his crash and restoring normalcy to their household. Sonny’s behavior turns increasingly erratic as he notices oddities and inconsistencies in his mother’s daily routine. Because no one else in their small town shares his concerns, Sonny has to piece the puzzle together largely on his own. Luckily, a ragtag group of friends—including characters played by Grace Brennan, Maliq Johnson, Colter Lee, Meera Syal, and Mahaela Park—supports him through the bizarre twists and turns.

Weekly Release Schedule Leading to December
Following the two-episode premiere on October 20, 2026, new installments arrive weekly on Hulu and on Disney Plus for bundle subscribers. The eight-episode run maintains a weekly cadence until the season concludes on December 1. Viewers can stream the show on both platforms, provided they meet regional and age requirements.
