Search for Texas Family Ends with Recovery After Alaska boat Capsizing

nearly ten months after a boat capsized off the coast of Homer, Alaska, the search for a missing texas family has yielded grim results. Authorities have recovered human remains from the sunken vessel.
The U.S.Coast Guard initially suspended its search in August 2024 for David and Mary Maynard, of Troy, Texas, and their two sons, Colton, 11, and Brantley, 8.The family was aboard a 28-foot aluminum boat with others when it capsized approximately 16 miles west of Homer.

Alaska State Troopers enlisted the help of Support Vessels of Alaska, Vision Subsea, and Benthic Geoscience Inc. These companies provided specialized equipment to aid in the search. The missing boat was located in early May.
“In early May, the group was able to locate the vessel in 180 feet of water and, utilizing a remotely operated vehicle, they were able to positively identify it as the missing boat with potential human remains onboard,” the Alaska State Troopers reported.
Divers have as recovered three sets of remains from the wreckage.These remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and autopsy.

Authorities have notified the family’s next of kin. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers expressed gratitude to all those involved in the recovery operation.
“The alaska wildlife Troopers would like to thank Support Vessels of Alaska, Vision Subsea, Benthic Geoscience Inc, and Alaska Dive Search, Rescue, and Recovery Team for their continued assistance with this search and recovery operation,” they said.
A GoFundMe page created after the family first went missing described the Maynards as people who “left a huge imprint on many people,” bringing laughter and providing a ”love and family-oriented connection.”
It is indescribable the void that will be left behind, but I know if we come together as a family and a community they would know how much they meant to everyone.
What’s next
The State Medical Examiner’s Office will work to identify the recovered remains. The investigation into the Alaska boat capsizing is ongoing.
