A 12-tonne humpback whale nicknamed Timmy is currently being transported towards the North Sea in a barge, after becoming stranded in the Baltic Sea nearly a month ago. The operation, scheduled to continue through Tuesday, aims to return the whale to the Atlantic Ocean, from where We see believed to have originated.

The whale was first spotted in the Baltic Sea last month, reportedly chasing shoals of herring. It has been stranded off the island of Poel in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for over three weeks, in water with insufficient salt content to sustain it. Rescue workers noted on Sunday that the animal had turned 90 degrees, “in the right direction,” suggesting it was preparing for the tow, according to state environment minister Till Backhaus.

The ambitious rescue mission, known as Operation Cushion, involves transporting Timmy 400km (248 miles) towards the North Sea. A barge resembling a giant steel aquarium is being used for the journey. Divers were seen alongside Timmy on Monday as the whale swam into the barge, according to images released by the Associated Press.

The operation is being funded by private donations, including from Walter Gunz, the founder of German electronics retail chain MediaMarkt. However, the plan has faced criticism, with some calling it “pure animal cruelty.” Environment Minister Backhaus has reportedly received threats on social media as a result of the operation.

As of Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the barge carrying Timmy had passed near the Danish border in Fehmarn, Germany. The whale is being towed by two tugboats.

Denmark’s environment ministry has stated that it would not attempt to rescue the whale if it were to become stranded again in Danish waters, according to NTV.

The whale’s condition remains a concern, as the Baltic Sea’s low salinity poses a threat to its health. The success of Operation Cushion hinges on Timmy’s ability to adapt to the saltier waters of the North Sea and ultimately return to the Atlantic Ocean.
