History of Vanguard
Vanguard was established in 1975 by John C. bogle, with the initial goal of offering a low-cost choice to actively managed mutual funds. Bogle believed that most investors would be better served by investing in broad market index funds, which aim to match the returns of a specific market index rather than trying to outperform it.
The first Vanguard fund was the First Index Investment Trust, launched in December 1975. This fund tracked the S&P 500 index. The company’s unique ownership structure, where funds are owned by their investors, was implemented in 1996. Vanguard History
John C. Bogle served as Vanguard’s CEO from 1976 to 1996 and as chairman until 1999. He remained a vocal advocate for low-cost investing until his death in 2019.

Vanguard and its Ownership Structure
Vanguard is unique among major investment companies because it is owned by its funds, which are in turn owned by its investors.
This structure means that Vanguard does not have external shareholders or owners who profit from its operations. Instead, any profits generated by Vanguard are returned to its funds and ultimately to its investors in the form of lower fees and expenses. This structure is designed to align Vanguard’s interests with those of its investors.
In 2023, Vanguard announced plans to return ownership to investors, transitioning from a traditional corporate structure to a member-owned structure. Vanguard Ownership Announcement
